Sample Fundraising Letters

Here are several sample letters which you can base your own on. Be sure to include your own contact information in them! An ideal fundraising packet will include this letter, a pamphlet or fact sheet about HOBY, and a donation form. Don't forget to personalize th e letter as much as possible with your own experiences and thoughts -- these are just a starting point. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at all. Good luck!

Hello!

I'm David Clark, a student at Michigan Technological University. I am writing to you regarding a wonderful group that I am involved with called H ugh O'Brian Youth Leadership, also known as HOBY. Every year, HOBY seminars help thousands of sophomore "ambassadors" develop their leadership skills, think independently, become more active and informed citizens, help others through community service... and be energetic and enthusiastic about leadership! During the seminar which I attended in 1998, I learned a tremendous amount about leadership, had the time of my life, and left the seminar enthused and ready to make a difference in the world!

This is why I have continued my involvement with HOBY -- it has energized my life so much that I'm returning to he West Michigan HOBY seminar this year as a member of Team Alumni (a "TA") to help a brand new group of sophomores have this wonderful experie nce! The duties of a TA include welcoming ambassadors, making them feel comfortable, assembling supplies, guiding group discussions, organizing a dance and a talent show, and generally making sure that everything works smoothly, everyone has a great time, and everyone is energized and enthused! TA's are the workhorses who make the seminars such a great experience, and who often have to do the most difficult "behind the scenes" work. I am thrilled to have the chance to help make Michigan's 2003 HOBY semina r a wonderful experience for over 200 sophomores from around the state, including more Keweenaw students than in any previous year!

To become a TA, I must raise funds to help support the seminars -- my goal is to raise $500. I would like to ask your organization to make a tax-deductible donation will help pay for all of the supplies, food, and necessities for one ambassador at the conference. Ambassadors pay nothing to attend the seminar, and everybody involved in HOBY, from the counselors to th e speakers, is a volunteer. Donations from businesses and other donors is the only way that this excellent program can exist. I am enclosing a donation form as well as additional information about HOBY. Please feel free to contact me if you have any furt her questions.

HOBY is an excellent program for you to help support. Since 1958, when HOBY was founded by actor Hugh O'Brian, over 220,000 Sophomores have participated. There are seminars in every state and 40 countries, all of which help to ed ucate the leaders of the future. Please support this outstanding program!

Thank you,

David Clark

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership
Leslie Daunter, East Side Alumni Vice-President

Dear Sirs,

My name is Leslie Daunter, and I am writing you regarding the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership organization, also known as HOBY. I have b een an active participant in HOBY for 3 years now. I am a first year student at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; I graduated from Lincoln Park High School last June.

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership is an organization that holds a 3-day seminar, held annually, for high school sophomores. Only one sophomore from each high school in Michigan is invited to attend. Upon my invitation to attend, to be honest, I was not all that excited about attending another "leadership seminar". Even wh en I was dropped off that Friday morning, I really didn't want to be there. The following three days would see an unbelievable change, though. When my parents came to pick me up after the seminar was over, I was the most enthused, inspired, and exciteds ophomore student there ever was. The people I met and the things I learned over the weekend made such a positive and inspiring impact on my life -- I didn't want to leave!! It is for this reason that I am continuing to stay involved in such a great orga nization that changes the lives of so many students each year (over 200 from Southeastern Michigan alone and many more nationwide).

My personal history of involvement with HOBY is lengthy. I was a student of HOBY in 1998, a junior counselor in 1 999, and a service project coordinator in 2000. For this coming year, I will be serving as the director of the junior counselors (also known as Team Alumni) at the 2001 seminar this May. And I don't foresee this volunteer spirit in me stopping anytime i n the near future!

You may be wondering why I am telling you all of this. It is really hard to put into words exactly what HOBY means to me, but let me just tell you that I would not dedicate myself so strongly to something that didn't have such a powerful impact on my life. I work hard for HOBY and volunteer a countless number of hours because it is an organization I believe in with all of my heart.

HOBY is a non-profit organization and is not allowed to be funded by any of the partic ipating high schools. Each annual HOBY seminar costs approximately $40,000.00 to run and is funded solely by donations from private organizations, businesses, and individuals. I am writing you today to ask that you help out the future of HOBY and our fu ture leaders by financially sponsoring a student. One sponsorship is approximately $200. However, we are very much appreciative of any donation, whether it be a partial sponsorship or four entire sponsorships. There are also many other ways in which yo u can help HOBY, such as volunteering your time to help plan the seminar, speaking on one of the interactive panels at the seminar, or by donating in-kind gifts.

I am including a donation form as well as an additional information sheet about HOBY . If you wish, students, volunteers, and leaders of Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership can also come and give your business or group a short presentation on HOBY and all that we do. Please help us and invest in the future of Michigan. Feel free to use my co ntact information at the top of this sheet to reach me if you have any questions. You may also contact the chairperson of this year's seminar directly; her information is listed below.

Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon! Hope for HOBY,

Leslie Daunter
