[edit] MathLab Hours and Schedule

  • Opens at 8am Monday through Friday
  • Opens at noon Saturday and Sunday.
  • Closes at 11pm Sunday through Thursday.
  • Closes at 5pm on Friday and Saturday.

There are calculus labs sections in 331 from roughly:

  • 8am to 10pm Tuesday through Thursday
  • Friday 8am-1pm.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday morning are mainly Calc II
  • Wednesday afternoon and Thursday are mainly Calc I (Ma1160 and Ma1161 are combined)
  • Friday morning is mainly novice sections of Calc III

Calc III students (except novice sections) are free to use the lab and take quizzes in 330 or 331 whenever they are not full.

There is a consultant on duty when the lab is open. They may be wandering around the labs helping students or at the desk in 331. Please report it if no one is around Report It! (you will be asked to sign in)

[edit] MathLab Software

  • Mathematica 7.0
  • MatLab
    • Industry standard Linear Algebra Software
  • SAS
    • Industry standard Statistical Software
    • Only in 330
  • Magma
    • Only on 4 machines in 330
  • C, C++, Fortran
    • Industry standard gcc compiler suite

[edit] MathLab Courses

Due to the large number of students in the lab, we must operate according to and enforce some simple and consistent policies concerning exercises, due dates, and grades.

[edit] Calculus Labs

The labs provide a hands on introduction to solving Calculus problems using the industry standard Mathematica software. The lab grade forms at least 10% of your total calculus grade and is based on weekly Mathematica labs (register at www.mathlab.mtu.edu/registration) and Blackboard (www.courses.mtu.edu) quizzes. Complete information is at www.mathlab.mtu.edu.

Talk to a consultant in F330/331 or contact the appropriate (calc1cc@mtu.edu, calc2c@mtu.edu, calc3cc@mtu.edu) Course Coordinator for additional information.

[edit] Calculus Lab Typical Schedule

  • Calculus lab has three weekly assignments:
    • A lab to complete and hand in.
      • MA1160 and MA1161 Calculus w/ Technology I.
      • MA2160 Calculus w/ Technology II.
      • MA3160 Multivariable Calc w/ Tech.
      • Labs are due by 10pm for Calc I and II and 5pm for Clac III on the due date.
        • Late labs will only be accepted by lab TA's when presented with a doctor's note or other official documentation.
      • Labs are handed to MathLab Consultants who scan the barcodes. You will get an automatic email receipt.
        • Information (particularly the barcode) on the front must be complete, correct, and legible.
    • Two Blackboard Quizzes
      • A "Long" 30 minute quiz testing lab material.
        • Best score counts, Infinite retakes, unsupervised.
        • Makeup "Long" quizzes are during the last week of class.
      • A "Short" 8 minute quiz with questions similar to the "Long" quiz.
        • Single attempt, supervised in MathLab.
        • Makeup "short" quizzes are during the last week of class.

[edit] Calculus Lab Grades

  • Quiz grades are recorded at Blackboard
    • "Estimate" and "Guess" will have a percentage error of 10%. If the answer is 0.6ish e.g the x- coord of the intersection in Plot[ {Sin[x], Cos[ Sin[x] + x^2]}, {x, 0, 2}] then 10% is fine. i.e 0.54<x<0.66 should be acceptable!
    • "Compute accurate value" means use Mathematica accuracy and precision. This means 6 digits of accuracy. Percentage error 0.002% is acceptable.
  • Lab grades are recorded at Lab Grades.
    • Email provides receipts for submission and grading.
    • Labs are returned to the file cabinets in the lab.
    • Verify your recorded grades are correct. Lab grades are permanent after a week.
  • Grading Policy
    • For students taking the lab for the first time:
      • 30% Labs
      • 30% Long Quizzes
      • 40% Short Quizzes
    • For students repeating the labs:
      • 50% Long Quizzes
      • 50% Short Quizzes

[edit] Non calculus courses

  • MA3560 Mathematical Modeling with Differential Equations.
  • MA4908 Discovering Number Theory.
  • Other courses as scheduled.

[edit] MathLab Troubleshooting

  1. Open a terminal window. (Right-click on the desktop and select "Open Terminal".)
  2. Type in the rm ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/{lock,.parentlock} and hit enter:
  3. Restart Firefox.
  4. If this doesn't work, and you don't care if you lose your settings (such as bookmarks, history, etc), type rm -rf ~/.mozilla
  • For help with the lab programs (Blackboard, Mathematica, OpenOffice, etc.), ask one of the lab consultants on duty.
  • Ccontact the appropriate Course Coordinator (calc1cc@mtu.edu, calc2cc@mtu.edu, or calc3cc@mtu.edu) for Blackboard questions that consultants can not answer.
  • For hardware issues, or problems with/ideas for this website, contact the MathLab System Administrator (due to the amount of spam that this account receives, only e-mails from an @mtu.edu account will be read).
